DuckDuckGo returned 13 unpaid links; six were relevant. Bing delivered six unpaid results, just three of which made sense in context, though the relevant ones were pushed beneath advertisements.

What this shows is the dominance of monetization over usefulness. Google’s grip on search has long shifted search itself into an ad distribution engine. This affects brand visibility and undermines user trust. The intent now isn’t necessarily to provide you the best information, it’s to optimize for what keeps users on the page or generates ad clicks.

GenAI environments didn’t evolve from a clean slate, they were trained, in part, on this ecosystem. So they reflect similar tendencies, often reproducing embedded biases in what they surface. Links to Reddit threads, video content, or unrelated how-to articles appear not because they directly answer the user’s question, but because they match historic engagement patterns or were classified as broadly “helpful.”

As a decision-maker, this forces a shift in how you approach digital outreach and product discoverability. Having the best product matters, but unless you’re configuring your data and messaging to align with AI-friendly formats and keyword strategies, it likely won’t surface. For Gemini, although it doesn’t support persistent memory yet, one-time prompts can still be effective. You can systematically ask it to explain the time range used in data, which entities were deliberately excluded (such as companies below a certain size or outside a specific region), and which public sources shaped the response.

This isn’t about manipulating the model. It’s about requiring clean logic from what is essentially probabilistic output. And if you’re running a business that depends on repeatable analysis, procurement insights, or competitive intelligence, these strategies should be part of your team’s workflow, especially at the leadership level.

These tools weren’t built to be transparent by default, but they can be shaped. Most professionals don’t take the time to challenge the models with audit-level queries, but that’s what’s required to get past surface-level replies.
