Looking outside tech means changing more than where you apply

Developers can widen their search to banks, healthcare organizations, manufacturers, retailers, and other businesses. The work in these sectors can differ from a conventional product-engineering role at a technology company.

“The demand for developers in non-tech sectors is real and growing, but the roles look different from what you’d find at a software company,” says Pragati Awasthi, assistant teaching professor of AI and data science at Drexel University. That is Awasthi’s assessment of the market.

Recruiters and talent specialists describe roles where coding sits alongside AI literacy, domain knowledge, system design, debugging, security, compliance, reliability, and communication. Their examples show why candidates may need to change the skills they emphasize and how they explain their value.

The developer profile changes when software is part of the business operation

“Across all these sectors, the common thread is that software is no longer a support function; it is embedded in core operations,” Awasthi says. “The developer in these environments is often the person translating domain-specific business problems into technical solutions, which requires a different profile than a pure product engineer at a tech firm.”

Awasthi points to financial services/fintech, healthcare/healthtech, retail/ecommerce, and manufacturing as sectors that generate sensitive, regulated, or operationally critical data. She argues that developers in these environments benefit from understanding the rules and processes that shape technical decisions.

The context varies by sector. A healthcare developer may need to understand healthcare compliance when working with patient data. A financial-services developer can encounter financial regulation and credit risk. Manufacturing work can require knowledge of process logic and operational systems.

Awasthi recommends choosing an industry and learning its regulatory environment, business model, and practitioner problems alongside its technology stack. Knowing HIPAA or understanding credit risk, in her view, can shape how a developer designs a system and evaluates its output.

Recruiters describe hybrid skills across different industries

Summit Search Group has placed developers inside and outside technology companies. Matt Erhard, managing partner at Summit Search Group, says its non-tech work spans several functions and industries. As a recruiting firm, Summit Search Group benefits commercially when employers use recruiting services and candidates participate in the hiring market.

Randstad Digital, a provider of global technology talent, also reports demand for web developers, system developers, and app developers at non-tech companies. Michael Morris, global head of platform and talent at Randstad Digital, says the work ranges from customer-facing platforms to internal tools. He also points to software architecture and DevOps roles that support existing technology. Randstad Digital has a commercial interest in demand for technology talent because providing that talent is part of its business.

Morris uses a retailer’s supply-chain system as an example. A developer working on such a system, he says, needs to understand how the technology connects with the operation it serves. Business and product context then inform technical decisions.

AI adds another set of skills in the accounts from Awasthi and Erhard. Awasthi recommends fluency with AI-assisted development, including the ability to identify output that is wrong, incomplete, or inappropriate in a regulated environment. Erhard describes AI literacy as increasingly important and says developers should at minimum understand concepts such as prompt engineering and using AI tools to improve efficiency.

Erhard also says problem framing, system design, and cross-functional communication have become important alongside AI-assisted coding. He reports that strong candidates can show AI-augmented workflows together with standard coding ability and recommends demonstrating this experience on a résumé. He also sees demand for developers who combine engineering experience with regulated-domain expertise such as healthcare compliance or financial regulations.

“The strongest candidates have projects in their portfolio that directly tie to and solve real business problems,” Erhard says. Such a project can give recruiters evidence of technical skill and domain understanding.

Morris emphasizes system-level judgment. He recommends “deeper thinking,” including system design mastery: understanding how microservices, databases, and third-party APIs interact securely and efficiently. He also emphasizes product context when developers guide large language models (LLMs), software models trained to generate and process language.

Morris recommends incident-response and root-cause-analysis skills for systems involving multiple AI agents as well. His concern is that these systems can fail and leave humans to trace logic flaws.

Rohit Agarwal, co-founder of Zenius, a remote hiring company, identifies security, compliance, and reliability as especially important in fields such as finance and healthcare. He says this creates demand for developers who understand the relevant regulatory environments. Zenius has a commercial interest in hiring demand because remote hiring is its business.

Non-tech developer opportunities may carry unfamiliar job titles

The examples from Erhard and Morris span systems engineer, application developer, web developer, architecture, DevOps, internal applications, and customer-facing platforms. They also cover assignments such as workflow automation, legacy modernization, systems integration, and data engineering.

Candidates can use those examples to broaden their search terms. Searching by business problem and system type can uncover roles described differently from product-engineering jobs at technology companies. The same approach can shape a résumé: candidates can describe the operational problem, system constraints, and business result alongside the languages and frameworks they used.

Agarwal recommends referrals, direct outreach, and industry-specific communities as other ways to find opportunities. That is his job-search advice rather than a measurement of how often roles are filled outside public job postings.

For candidates, the adjustment is skills plus positioning

Developers considering a move from technology companies can make the business outcome of their technical work visible. For an AI-assisted workflow, that means explaining the problem, the system design, where AI output required human judgment, and how the developer handled relevant failures, security, reliability, or compliance requirements.

Domain knowledge can make that explanation more specific. A candidate targeting healthcare can show how compliance affects architecture or data handling. Someone targeting financial services can explain how regulation or credit risk changes technical decisions. The goal is to connect engineering choices with the environment in which the software operates.

Morris recommends continuous learning, upskilling, and hybrid technical and business skills. He also recommends joining talent communities, learning from their members, pursuing AI-skilling opportunities, and experimenting independently or through structured programs. These are Morris’s preparation strategies and should be evaluated in light of Randstad Digital’s commercial role in the technology-talent market.

Erhard’s portfolio advice offers a concrete way to present that preparation. A project tied to a real business problem can show the candidate’s code, domain knowledge, system-level judgment, and ability to explain why particular technical choices were made.
