These don’t depend on whether someone “seems” legit. They establish identity with authority, rooted in design, not guesswork.
So what does that mean in real terms?
At the infrastructure level, implementing DNS-based authentication verifies whether communication is coming from a real source, not a manipulated spoof. These systems use strong cryptography, not guesswork. Machine learning can’t fake DNS records unless it controls the domain. That’s a roadblock AI doesn’t get past.
Next, add the physical layer, security tokens, smart cards, and biometric scans. These require hardware or biological input. Again, outside AI’s domain.
Then include runtime behavior checks, like an AI-powered monitoring system that looks at where a login is happening from, what device it’s happening on, and if that makes sense in context. This is where enterprises can still leverage AI. Use it to flag anomalies instead of trusting it to differentiate between real and fake users at the point of entry.

They’re reliable, low-cost, and scalable across large user bases. These reduce the risks tied to static credentials but don’t eliminate higher-level threats.
Biometric authentication, face scans, fingerprints, voice recognition, is stronger. These inputs are unique to individuals and harder to forge. Add multi-modal biometric authentication, like combining face and fingerprint, and your defenses get even harder to penetrate. These methods create serious friction for bad actors trying to pass themselves off as someone else. They still need your face, your hand, your voice, not just a password.
Push notifications are better than nothing but can be targeted with prompt bombing attacks. If an attacker sends dozens of push approval prompts, a tired or distracted employee might accept one just to clear the screen. That’s not a reliable defense.
SMS-based codes are the weakest of the options still widely used. They rely on legacy telecom systems, which opens them up to SIM-swapping, interception, and social engineering. These methods continue to expose organizations to unnecessary risk, especially when stronger alternatives exist.
Then there’s cryptographic authentication, including passkeys that are based on open internet standards like FIDO2 and WebAuthn. These approaches bind authentication to trusted domains and align identity with secure hardware-based credentials. AI can clone a face or mimic behavior, but it can’t generate cryptographic keys tied to a device. Not yet.
If you’re evaluating MFA choices, go for the options that minimize AI’s advantage. Biometrics and cryptographic methods create real friction where needed, without compromising speed or usability. At the executive level, make sure the company isn’t just “using MFA”, make sure it’s using the right kind.
The future of authentication lies in passkeys
Authentication is moving past passwords. Passkeys are the next step, and they’re already supported by Apple, Google, Microsoft, and GitHub. This isn’t a fringe trend. It’s where secure authentication is headed at scale.
Passkeys are based on FIDO2 and WebAuthn, open standards that close some of the biggest gaps in today’s systems. They use public-private key cryptography, meaning the user holds the private key locally on their device, and it gets matched with a public key stored with the service provider. When these match, access is granted. There’s no password to steal. There’s nothing AI can fake.

Attackers can’t spoof a look-alike domain and trick credentials out of users, because the passkey simply won’t respond to the wrong site. If you combine passkeys with device-level biometrics, like Touch ID or Face ID, the result is a high-trust, low-friction experience for users. It’s secure without slowing people down. Here’s the shift that needs to happen: Companies must stop treating AI and authentication as separate systems. They’re not competitors, and they’re not interchangeable. AI is excellent at anomaly detection, real-time analysis, and response. Authentication is about access control. When tied together correctly, they build a much more difficult environment for attackers to navigate.
Detection systems flag things like odd login locations, strange times of access, or risky devices. With AI, those alerts can happen in real time. But what if there’s no strong second factor at the access point? Then the attacker gets in before the alert even fires. The incident becomes a reactive clean-up instead of a contained failure.
Authentication methods like passkeys and physical biometrics don’t require detection. They’re definitive. Either the user is who they say they are, verifiably, or they’re not. This brings certainty to an area where AI, even at its best, is still based on probabilities.
