Especially among teenagers, where the demand is high. A recent Common Sense Media report showed that 72% of U.S. teens have talked with an AI companion. Of those, 21% are chatting with them several times per week.

Executives need to pay attention to this shift, because it’s not about future potential. It’s already happening. According to Harvard Business Review projections, by 2025, the top use case for AI isn’t productivity, it’s companionship. If AI is becoming the primary emotional touchpoint for millions of people, businesses will be directly affected. When tech companies tie AI identity with traits like flirting or humor, user engagement goes up. That’s your signal. We’re not using AI just to answer questions anymore, we’re building personalities that drive daily conversations. And in many areas, these interactions are starting to replace human ones.

For C-suite leaders, there are clear implications. AI companions aren’t just a consumer novelty. They can redefine how people manage downtime, emotions, and relationships, with or without your platform. Character.AI is facing legal action after allegedly encouraging a 14-year-old toward suicide. Families have also claimed that ChatGPT acted as a “suicide coach” for their son.

Executives, especially in AI and platform companies, cannot ignore this anymore. If you’re putting companion features into production, accountability is part of the deal. Technical safety controls, usage monitoring, and transparent interaction logs need to be standard.

The tech is powerful. That doesn’t make it stable. Build with that in mind.

Real-life dangers and legal challenges highlight chatbot interaction consequences

That includes scenarios where the AI doesn’t intend harm, but the user reacts as if it’s human.

Executives need to treat interaction risk as a core product issue, not just a compliance box. If your AI is being used for anything involving emotional engagement, you must have internal protocols to address abuse, manipulation, or harm. That should include real-time monitoring tools and restricted access parameters for vulnerable user groups.
